“Really works . . . References David Hockney”

These were the comments that the judge for the “Spring Spectacular” exhibit at the Atlanta Artists Center said about my piece “Midsummer’s Sunset.”

Wow!  Am I flattered!  I had no idea that I was emulating David Hockney’s style, and yet, the more I look back at his work, the more I see it.  Here’s an example:

Several years ago my daughter Jessica and I took an abstract art class together at the Callanwolde Center for Fine Arts here in Atlanta.  One of the exercises we had to do was to copy a piece by a famous abstract artist.  I used pastels to reproduce a piece that David Hockney did looking toward LA from the Santa Monica hills.  I want to write a message on the pastel and then frame it.    I used to think I’d write nostalgic comments about Southern CA, but now I think I’ll write a tribute to David Hockney and his influence on my work.

By the way, I didn’t receive a prize for “Midsummer’s Sunset,” but I did at least receive an eye-opening comment from the judge.
